For those who would like to know a little bit about dairy sheep, here is a brief introduction on some of the most important factors when choosing a dairy ewe or ram. Please visit our "SHEEP" title tab for more info on our specific breeds. Our greatest obsession and challenge in the last 18 years has been selecting and producing genetically and environmentally superior sheep for dairies and smallholders in the US. Program priorities:
Personality/Disposition
High milk production and correct hand milking udder conformation
Heartiness and parasite resistance on grass-based intensive rotational program
Marketable wool quality
Rapid growth/mature for tupping at 5-6 mo age
High live lambing percentages from age 11mo-10yrs. (>200%)
Many do not realize that 50% of successful shepherding is environmental, and 50% is genetics. A wholistic mindset in understanding what makes sheep thrive is the first step in successful shepherding. We strive to grow the industry and promote dairy sheep in the United States, and understand that eliminating negative genetic traits moves us closer to that goal each year. Conversely, it is possible to have all the best genetics, and adhere to poor practices that will ensure a swift and disappointing outcome in our herds. By eliminating factors that may cause complication for us in the future, we are elevating these magnificent creatures and simplifying the experience for all of those who choose our genetics and program. Why our program is unique and influential:
We bottle feed ALL ewe lambs so they are delightful to work with and comfortable with people
We bottle feed with REAL sheep milk to ensure healthy gut and life-long health
Ram lambs are dam-raised or bucket fed and NOT socialized to avoid creating aggression
We supplement with additional selenium and graze rotationally to avoid parasite loads and deficiencies
We provide 3-4 Generation Pedigrees for all breeding lambs
Breed percentages, birthdates, and pictures of lambs are posted each day to simplify integration into your existing herd or to determine your focus for a brand-new program.
Our entire herd is negative every year we have tested for CL, OPP, Q Fever, and Johnes. We keep a small closed flock and only use chemical dewormers when absolutely necessary. (1-2 per year) Our sheep are exceptionally hearty, producing between a half and 1 gallon of milk per day. Ewes present a beautiful crimpy fleece, large litters (triplets and quads) excellent teat structure, and correct udder conformation for the benefit of hand milkers and longevity in the ewe. We feed primarily NON-GMO Alfalfa and our own grass hay. A three or four generation pedigree with detailed information on genetic history and medical records will be provided upon pickup for all breeding lambs.
